Below the mountain sits St Catherine's Monastery, one of the oldest continuously operating Christian monasteries on earth, founded in the 6th century AD and home to one of the world's greatest collections of ancient manuscripts and Byzantine icons.

Getting here from Sharm El-Sheikh requires a night transfer. Your driver departs Sharm between 10 PM and midnight, depending on your fitness level and the season. The road winds inland through 200 km of dramatic red granite mountains, arriving at the foot of Mount Sinai around 1–2 AM.

The Sunrise Climb — Step by Step

From the mountain base, the most popular route is the Steps of Penitence — approximately 3,750 stone steps carved by monks, taking 2.5–3.5 hours to ascend. At the summit there is a small chapel and, in the months before sunrise, dozens of pilgrims and trekkers gathered in blankets. As the first light silhouettes the mountains in every direction, the silence and scale of the landscape are genuinely humbling. After descending (around 3 hours), most visitors spend 1–2 hours visiting the monastery, including the famous Burning Bush garden.
